Visit preparation
We ask teachers to prepare the students’ visit to the Museum. “Teaching Resources” provide a variety of resources that will help the teacher to prepare the visit.
To ensure the effectiveness of the visit, the students need to be motivated. They should be informed and prepared for what they will see at the museum and be aware of the theme of the visit.
The better prepared the visit is, the more successful it will be. That is why support information and suggestions are provided to help you plan.
Museums and schools: partnerships for education
The educational role of museums has gained importance and recognition over recent years. Education cannot be confined to the classroom, so a visit to the Museum is a unique opportunity to complete the formal education that school provides.
Motivate your students with the idea that it is fun to come to the Museum.
Explain very clearly that learning at the Museum is very different from learning at school. Through its exhibits, the Museum can:
- Teach students to observe
- Awaken interest
- Stimulate critical reasoning
- Facilitate understanding of abstract concepts
- Develop an aesthetic sense
- Promote creativity
The teacher should cover the following questions with his/her students:
- What is the Paper Money Museum?
The Museum is housed in two permanent exhibition rooms. The paper money room presents the history of paper money in Portugal, and includes an important collection of notes with issues from the Bank of Portugal and the Nacional Ultramarino Bank. You can also see collections of all kinds of paper money: shares, stamped paper, emergency money, Royal Treasury bills and lotteries.
The miniature transport room shows the relationship between money and transport. This is done through a precious and extensive collection of over 5,000 car miniatures as well as collections of boats, trains and planes. These treasures are contextualised through films, models, viewmasters and multimedia kiosks.
- Why is it important to go to the Paper Money Museum?
The Museum teaches the students to:
- Observe (learn and see) paper money
- Learn and understand the history of money in Portugal (learn from objects and their stories, be curious, ask questions, create critical mass)
- Listen (get to know the stories that money has to tell)
- Reflect and enjoy
- Integrate people, developing various competencies
- Acquire financial literacy and learn to deal with money in a balanced and healthy way.
- What is the theme of the visit?
The Education Service has a wide programme for all levels of schooling, including pre-school. There are two types of visit:
a) single visit
b) continuity project
Choose the type and the theme of the visit and explain clearly to your students what to expect from the visit.
The exhibits are the starting point. On each visit clues will be given so that they can observe, think and talk about what they feel when they look at the objects in the Museum.
At the Museum, the objects will be contextualised and interpretations proposed that will lead to associations between the museum object and a certain situation that led to it. There is therefore historic contextualisation and the opportunity for every student’s observation and imagination to be stimulated.
