Paper money exhibition
- The paper money exhibition shows the history of paper money as part of Portuguese heritage and aims to preserve evidence of the country’s economic, social and cultural evolution. The exhibition includes various collections: Royal Treasury bills (the collection has a very rare example, a 2,400 Reis bill, dating from 1797, from the first issue of the Loan, which is the only known copy). There are also banknotes from mainland Portugal and the former colonies, cheques, shares, lotteries, stamped paper, drafts and the most complete collection of emergency money in Portugal.
The collection includes every issue of Portuguese notes, in particular thirty unique notes. There are examples from various banking institutions, namely the Bancos Emissores do Norte, Bank of Lisbon, Bank of Portugal, Bank of Angola, Banco Nacional Ultramarino and Bank of Brazil (colonial era). There are also examples from non-banking institutions that also issued notes, such as the companies João de Brito, Estradas de Lisboa ao Porto, Thomas Jorge das Neves and Contracto do Tabaco, and even from the Public Treasury of Angola, Mozambique and the Portuguese State of India.
The exhibition is adapted for the blind and visually impaired as well as for cerebral palsy sufferers. The museum provides information on paper (Braille) as well as a digital version.
